What is orthopedics and what is an orthopedic surgeon?

Orthopedics is the treatment of illness or injury involving the bones, ligaments, and joints within the musculoskeletal system. It also encompasses reconstructive surgery for arthritis and the treatment of trauma. General orthopedics includes problems ranging from sports injuries, tendonitis, arthritis, fractures, to ligament and muscle injuries.

An orthopedic surgeon is a Medical Doctor, who after completing a college degree and four years medical school, takes five to six years of specialty training in the treatment of the bones, joints, and related structures.
